What Comes After The Wizard? - My Post L. Frank Baum Oz Reading List, for Sharing With Young Children
If you just got here, and you're wondering what this list is...
This list is about about finding cheap or free electronic versions of the Oz book. I've been trying to track down the "best" electronic version of each book, by which I mean the cheapest and also one that includes the original illustrations. I also note whether each book is currently available in print.
It's also all about sharing the Oz books with my daughter, and the fact that some of the books that were written by Baum's successors are not necessarily kid friendly by modern standards. To be clear I am totally and utterly against censorship and book banning, but I also don't want to read books with racist or violent themes to my four year old. I hate wandering into something I need to gloss over, by surprise, as I'm reading the books aloud. I thought others might find this info useful, so I'm sharing it here. I've been pre-reading the post Baum Oz books, and marking them as kid friendly or not. When I mark a book as not kid friendly, I note why. (And if you've read any of these later works I would love your opinion on how kid-friendly they are!)
If you're interested, here's a link to my original post How to Return to Oz - How to share Baum's Oz books with your kids, and What Should You Read Next?
Finally, please note this is a work in progress which I will be updating as time allows, and as we progress through the books.
First, a couple of quick links to the original series by L. Frank Baum:
- Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz - available in print
- Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz - digital version, free
Before continuing on with the original Oz series, I suggest a slight detour. These two books feature the previous adventures of Cap'n Bill and Trot, two of the main characters in the next Oz book:
(Sky Island also has appearances from some Oz favourites like Button Bright and Polychrome)
Oz book by L. Frank Baum, but not part of the series:
- Little Wizard Stories of Oz - available in print
- Little Wizard Stories of Oz - digital version, free
- The Woggle-Bug Book - available in print
- The Woggle-Bug Book - digital version, free
- Note: I haven't read this yet myself, but have heard it's very politically incorrect by today's standards so you may want to take a look at this one prior to reading aloud to younger kids.
The following is a list, in roughly chronological order by date they were written/published, of the books that are considered part of the Oz canon, and are consistent with the original L Frank Baum series.
Written by Ruth Plumly Thompson:
- The Royal Book of Oz - available in print
- The Royal Book of Oz - digital version, free
- The Royal Book of Oz, full scans with colour plates
- Note: Features slavery, racial stereotyping of oriental characters, plus many puns on out-dated words that make it hard for a young child to understand. I didn't enjoy reading this to my daughter, and would recommend skipping it.
