{ Life } Our Long Weekend...
Spring has really been dragging it's heels here. The truly lovely days have been few and far between, with cool, rainy and grey being the norm. Suddenly in the last two weeks or so, everything is blooming and growing. With a vengeance. The foot tall dandelions carpeting our lawn seem to be trying to make up for time lost.
Our plans for the long weekend? Yard work! Our backyard is in total disarray. Everything needs to be trimmed, and weeded. We need to bring the lawn furniture out of the shed, dig out the BBQ and put the canopy back on the gazebo. There are weeds EVERYwhere, and I do mean everywhere. They've even taken over the patio. We definitely have many hours of yard work ahead of us before this place is in shape for the summer time, and the pool parties and BBQs that I am looking forward to.
Ten years ago my idea of celebrating the May Two-Four weekend was a camping trip with twelve or so of my closest friends and a pick-up truck worth of beer. Now my plans are for yard work and a quiet family BBQ. Ah, the domesticated mom-life.
I have to admit, I am actually excited about taking the BBQ out and firing it up for the first time this year. My husband hates to cook, but will gladly barbecue. I produce various meats and he grills them. It's an excellent arrangement that gives me the occasional much needed break from the kitchen.
Wonder Bread's hot dog and hamburger buns are definitely a BBQ-time staple for us. They have a new line out this year called Wonder + Simply Free which is made with unbleached wheat flour and is free of artificial preservatives, flavors and colours. It’s also free of high fruitcose corn syrup (what the heck, is that normally in bread? I need to pay more attention to my labels). A healthy alternative to the classic tasty Wonder bun? I am so there.
I've been eyeing this burger recipe over at Canadian Living for Juicy Extra-Lean Burgers. It sounds like a low-cal version of the classic "Juicy Burger" my mom used to make when I was young. I'm thinking I'll give it a test drive this weekend, in between slaving over the darn dandelions.
HAPPY LONG WEEKEND! What are you folks planning on doing?

Sounds like fun! I can't believe either the growth. One morning I looked out and saw that all the trees had full grown leaves! Must have happened overnight!
Have a great weekend.
It's dragging here to :( Yesterday was like summer and today is freezing.
I gardened a little with my son too. We planted a few seeds yesterday. In the evening he jumped out of bed with a: "I just need to check if it has grown ..." Really hope something eatable will come up of the ground :)
Hope you enjoyed a cool BBQ :) Must check out those buns - I make most of our bread myself (then I know what's in it!) but some things are just much more convenient to buy. How did the burgers turn out?
It stormed Monday afternoon, which rained-out our BBQ plans. Earlier in the day I could smell the neighbours cooking outside, and I was so looking forward to barbecue hamburgers & hotdogs. Ah well, the burgers still taste ok when cooked inside. And maybe we will have to chance to have our cookout this weekend.
